In the realm of real estate, property prices are subject to a multitude of factors that influence their value. From location and market demand to property size and amenities, the interplay of these variables creates a complex pricing landscape. One fundamental determinant that significantly affects the price of property is the cost of construction. Rising construction costs is nothing new to the Philppine real estate market, however, the inflation experienced by the country in the past months has taken its toll to the materials and house construction costs.

In an article published by the Business World, the soaring inflation caused the Construction Materials Wholesale Price Index (CMWPI) in the National Capital Region to soar high at 8.3%– the highest ever recorded in 14 years. In addition, according to the the International Construction Costs Index 2023 reveals that building a house in Metro Manila has a higher cost per square meter than our neighboring countries like Vietnam, Malaysia, and India.
This means that building a house in Metro Manila has a higher cost per square meter than our neighboring countries like Vietnam, Malaysia, and India.
Over the years, construction costs have experienced significant fluctuations driven by numerous external factors. For instance, shifts in global supply and demand for building materials, such as lumber, steel, or concrete, can directly impact construction expenses. Moreover, labor shortages, changes in government regulations, and advancements in construction technology also play pivotal roles in shaping the cost landscape.
As an OFW investor, you may be worried that the rising house construction cost may affect the price of the house in the Philippines you are eyeing for. Well, you may be right on that part. Let’s take a look at the effect of rising construction costs on real estate investments:
Contractors are forced to put the weight of the rising basic construction costs to the shoulders of the consumers. This may lead to consumers backing away from the project or budget overruns on the part of the contractor.

In relation to the abovementioned, if the house construction budget goes overboard due to inflation, it may result in project delays or not pushing through at all. They may feel discouraged in investing due to the project delays.
Rising construction costs can make housing less affordable for potential buyers. As the price of constructing or renovating homes increases, developers and builders may need to adjust their pricing strategies to maintain profitability. This can lead to higher listing prices for new homes, making it more challenging for buyers to enter the housing market or afford the type of home they desire.
Higher construction costs may discourage developers from initiating new housing projects. When construction becomes more expensive, developers may delay or cancel new developments, resulting in a reduced housing supply. With fewer properties available for sale, competition among buyers increases, further driving up prices.

Rising construction costs can also impact existing homeowners. Homeowners planning renovations or remodeling projects may face higher costs, deterring them from making improvements or leading to scaled-down projects. Additionally, maintenance and repair costs for existing homes may also increase, affecting homeowners’ budgets and potentially impacting property values.
Construction cost increases can have varying effects on house prices, with regional disparities being a key factor. Construction costs can vary significantly between different areas due to factors such as labor availability, material prices, and local regulations. Therefore, regions with higher construction costs may experience more pronounced effects on housing prices, potentially exacerbating regional housing affordability gaps.
If rising construction costs significantly outpace homebuyers’ ability to afford higher prices, it can dampen demand in the housing market. This slowdown in demand can have broader economic implications, affecting related industries such as real estate, construction, and home improvement, potentially leading to job losses and decreased economic activity.
The answer is yes, however, you have to be prepared for the additional or high expenses that entails it. You also have to be flexible and patient as you wait for the curve to somehow flatten once again. Additionally, you may also consider other financing options that can aid you in your real estate purchase.
During periods of rising construction costs, there are several alternatives that can be considered to mitigate the impact on housing prices and address affordability concerns. Here are a few options:
As you wait for the prices to go down, you may focus on renovating or remodeling existing properties. This option can be more cost-effective as it avoids the higher expenses associated with new construction. By updating and improving older homes, homeowners can still meet their housing needs while potentially saving money.
Alternative construction methods, such as modular or prefabricated construction, can help reduce costs and construction time. These methods involve the fabrication of building components off-site, allowing for more efficient and cost-effective construction. Embracing such techniques can help developers and builders save on labor and material costs.
Instead of large-scale developments, focusing on smaller-scale projects can be a viable alternative. Building smaller, more compact homes or developing multifamily housing options like townhouses or apartments can help optimize land usage and reduce overall construction costs. These options can provide more affordable housing choices while maximizing limited resources.
Understanding market cycles helps OFW investors evaluate and manage risk effectively. By being aware of the potential fluctuations in construction costs and market conditions, they can make informed decisions regarding project feasibility, financing, and risk management strategies. This knowledge allows for a more proactive and measured approach to mitigate the potential impacts of rising construction costs on the financial viability of projects.
The cost of construction encompasses an array of expenses, including materials, labor, permits, machinery, and design. Changes in these factors can have a profound impact on the final price tag attached to a property. Understanding the dynamics of construction costs and their relationship with property prices is crucial for developers, investors, and homebuyers alike, as it allows them to make informed decisions and navigate the ever-changing real estate market.

Looking for outdoor Filipino home design? Well, you’ve come to the right place! Let’s transform your outdoor spaces, shall we?
The outdoor spaces in Filipino homes are much more than aesthetic attributes; they’re cherished areas of respite and relaxation that serve as sanctuaries amid the hustle and bustle of everyday life. They can also be transformed into areas where homeowners can entertain guests and host intimate gatherings. To enhance the ambiance and functionality of outdoor spaces, however, homeowners have to incorporate the right design elements that not only suit their practical needs but also to complement climate conditions in the Philippines.
Gardens, patios, and azoteas in each individual household carry a distinct significance and charm. To bring out their unique appeal, it’s essential to create a stylish space that not only makes these outdoor areas more appealing but also enhances their functionality. This ensures that these spaces remain inviting and tasteful throughout the year. Here are some ideas you can take into consideration.

To ensure the longevity and functionality of your outdoor space, investing in weather-resistant furniture is essential. The tropical climate of the Philippines can be harsh, with intense sun exposure and occasional rain showers, so opting for furniture made from for materials like teak, aluminum, or synthetic wicker is recommended. These types of furniture are known for their durability and resistance to weather elements. They’re also capable of withstanding the sun’s rays and are resistant to moisture and rot.
Additionally, choose cushions and fabrics designed for outdoor use. Fabrics such as polypropylene, duck cloth, textilene, and vinyl can withstand sun damage and moisture so they can maintain their appearance year round. You should also look for cushions that have been treated with UV protection and come with quick-drying features. This way, you can enjoy your outdoor space without constant maintenance or concerns about damage.
Make sure to check out online marketplaces and local second hand furniture stores near you to see weather-resistant tables and chairs for sale at reasonable prices.
Incorporating indigenous architectural elements into your outdoor spaces not only adds a unique touch but also pays homage to Filipino heritage. Structures made from bamboo and rattan, for example, provide the space with a rustic and authentic feel that brings a sense of traditional craftsmanship to your outdoor oasis.
With bamboo, you can create pergolas, fencing, or privacy screens to not only add indigenous design influences to the space but also showcase the material’s natural strength and flexibility. Bamboo trellises that are inspired by traditional Filipino lattice designs can also enhance the visual appeal of your outdoor space and serve as beautiful focal points. Rattan is another sustainable material that is widely available locally and often used to create beautiful furniture and decorative accents. Derived from a type of climbing palm, rattan imbues any space with an organic and natural feel, perfect for when you’re trying to achieve a design inspired by country’s beaches or mountain environments.
These architectural elements not only showcase the rich cultural heritage of the Philippines but also create a harmonious blend of tradition and modernity in your outdoor space.

Adding native flora to your outdoor spaces not only enhances the tropical ambiance but it also supports local biodiversity. The Philippines is blessed with a rich variety of plant species that thrive in the country’s climate, so finding flowering plants that fit the aesthetic and ambiance of your outdoor space will be a breeze.
If you’re looking for plants that can add a touch of color, the vibrant and showy blooms of the gumamela (Hibiscus) can instantly brighten up the space. Another option is the waling-waling (Vanda sanderiana), or the “Queen of Philippine Orchids.” Considered a rare species, waling-waling produces exquisite blooms that will definitely add a magical charm to your outdoor space. If you want something more fragrant, on the other hand, then let the ylang-ylang’s (Cananga odorata) star-shaped flowers fill the air with its intoxicatingly sweet fragrance. You can also plant kalachuchi (Plumeria), whose delicate and fragrant flowers are often associated with romance and mysticism.
As a bonus, these native plants attract local wildlife, such as butterflies, bees, and birds. As such, you’re able tocreate harmonious environment that connects you with the natural beauty of the Philippines and contributes to the preservation of local fauna.
Given the sociable nature of Filipinos, creating ample shade in your outdoor spaces is crucial to accommodating gatherings and to ensuring comfort even during the hottest parts of the day.
In addition to traditional patio umbrellas, incorporating pergolas with natural shade elements can create a cool and inviting space in your outdoor area. Consider using climbing plants such as bougainvillea or passionflower to provide your space with natural shade and a touch of lush greenery. These plants can be trained to grow on the pergola structure, creating a natural canopy that offers respite from the sun’s rays. Alternatively, bamboo blinds can be added to the sides of the pergola, allowing you to adjust the level of shade as desired.
Retractable awnings are another practical option for creating shade in your outdoor space. These awnings can be installed on the exterior of your home or attached to a pergola structure. With just a touch of a button or a manual crank, you can extend the awning to provide shade when needed and retract it when you want to enjoy the sunlight.
By incorporating shade structures into your outdoor space, you not only create a comfortable environment for gatherings but also add charm and character to your outdoor area. You and your guests can enjoy your outdoor space throughout the day without being exposed to the scorching heat of the sun.

Filipinos have a deep-rooted love for ihaw-ihaw (grilling) and dining with their families. To enhance your outdoor space and create an inviting atmosphere for culinary delights, you can createa dedicated cooking space, barbecue grill, or dining area.
Built-in barbecue grills or outdoor kitchens equipped with essential amenities allow you to savor the flavors of traditional Filipino cuisine while enjoying the fresh air. These cooking spaces can feature stainless steel grills, countertops for food preparation, and storage for utensils and ingredients. To add a touch of convenience, add sink and a mini refrigerator to keep beverages cool.
Complement your cooking area with comfortable dining sets or picnic-style seating arrangements. Opt for weather-resistant materials coupled with cushions designed for outdoor use. A large dining table with ample seating allows you to host family and friends for memorable meals in the open air. Moreover, adding shade structures or umbrellas over the dining area can provide you with comfort and protection from the sun while enjoying your outdoor meals.
By incorporating a dedicated cooking and dining space, you’ll create an outdoor oasis where you can enjoy delicious food, share laughter, and create lasting memories with loved ones. The combination of delectable aromas, fresh ingredients, and the ambiance of the outdoors truly captures the essence of Filipino culture and hospitality.
Water elements can add a sense of tranquility and relaxation to your outdoor space by creating a soothing ambiance. The sound and sight of flowing water have a calming effect on the mind and can help create a peaceful retreat in your own backyard. To ensure that the water features are properly incorporated into the design, get ones that suit your preferences and the available space.
Small garden fountains or cascading waterfalls, for example, provide you with the gentle sound of flowing water, creating a serene atmosphere. These features can be made from stone, concrete, or resin and come in various designs and sizes to suit your aesthetic preferences. Reflecting pools or small ponds, on the other hand, can become focal points, offering not only a visual delight but also a place for water plants to thrive. The reflection of the surrounding greenery and the sky on the water’s surface will add a sense of tranquility and depth to your outdoor oasis. To add an extra touch of beauty to the space, you can adorn these water features with floating lilies or lotus flowers.
If you want a more contemporary look, a water wall or water curtain might be more your style. These features can be created using stacked stones, glass panels, or stainless steel surfaces. As water cascades down the wall or flows through the curtain, it creates a mesmerizing visual display and a soothing sound that adds a sense of tranquility to your outdoor environment.
When incorporating water elements, it is essential to consider factors such as maintenance and safety. Ensure proper filtration and circulation systems are in place to keep the water clean and prevent stagnation. Additionally, consider child-friendly options such as shallow pools or fountains with a gentle flow.
Transforming your outdoor space into a tropical paradise for your Filipino home is an exciting endeavor that allows you to connect with nature and embrace the vibrant culture of the Philippines. By incorporating weather-resistant furniture, indigenous architectural elements, native flora, shade structures, cooking and dining areas, and water elements, you can create a stunning outdoor oasis that reflects your personal style and enhances your connection with the natural world.
How Can I Earthquake-proof my House in the Philippines?
Last June 15th, a 6.3 magnitude earthquake shook the lands of Calatagan, Batangas that awakened a large portion of the country in a sudden jolt. According to a report by Rappler, the powerful shake has a depth of 1.3 kilometers. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) warned the public of aftershocks reaching up to Intensity IV in Metro Manila and nearby cities.
In the event of a major earthquake, not only the lives of people are at risk, but the safety and strength of buildings and establishements as well. Earthquakes are nature’s way of displaying its formidable force, with the potential to wreak havoc in communities, leaving behind a trail of destruction of structures. As the Philippines sit within the Pacific Ring of Fire, it is prone to experiencing seismic activities with varying magnitudes and intensities that may cause destruction to properties.
As the Philippines continue to face the threat of earthquakes, safeguarding homes against these tremors becomes an essential priority for homeowners. Which then leads us to the question, “Is my House Earthquake Resilient?”
In this article, we will take a look at the features of earthquake resistant buildings as well as how you can integrate them into your home.

BigRentz shares some insights on how earthquake resistant structures are designed. And one of the crucial components is the flexible foundation of the establishment.
When the plates beneath the Earth move, they send tremors that may cause a building or establishment to crumble down. That’s why a sound and flexible foundation is extremely crucial. Big Rentz states that one of the ways to withstand earthquakes is to ‘lift the building’s foundation above the earth through a method called base isolation.’
The building is constructed on top of flexible pads that are usually made of steel, rubber, and lead. These systems of padded cylinders and ball bearings serve as shock absorbers that absorb seismic waves when an earthquake occurs.
Taking this context in home construction, Civil + Structural Engineer suggests to ‘place a solid foundation slab made of reinforced concrete and crisscrossing strips atop an intermediate cushion of sand.’ A house built with a foundation made with reinforced concrete slabs can withstand the shaking during earthquakes.
Not to forget, earthquake proof buildings should be built on a stable and strong soil.

To prevent the collapse of the property, the force of the earthquake should be evenly distributed. There are several essential elements to achieve this:
Diaphragms – The best examples of diaphragms are floors and roofs. They are beams built with their own decks that distribute the earthquake force to the vertical elements of the building, minimizing the earthquake damage.
Shear walls – Shear walls prevent the swaying of the building by stiffening the structure’s frame. These panels are usually supported by diagonal cross braces made of steel.
Moment-resisting frames – When it comes to flexibility, the moment-resisting frames get the job done. Optimum Seismic describes these as ‘an assembly of beams and columns in which those beams are flexible, but are rigidly connected to the columns.’ The way it is constructed allows the beams to sway while the joint remains steady and rigid.
Trusses – Trusses are diagonal structures that give additional strength to the diaphragm’s weak points.
Cross-bracing – This diagonal intersecting system aims to revert the seismic waves back to the ground.
Building earthquake resistant structures also takes windows into consideration, too. Glass windows may shatter that can cause injury to your family. That’s why it’s important to shore up your windows to hold the glass in place in case it shatters.
It is a rule of thumb that building earthquake proof homes means installing light roofing. Check out our article about choosing the right roofing for your home in the Philippines.

When building earthquake proof houses, the quality and type of materials should also be taken into consideration aside from the construction. Reinforced concrete and wood are some of the favored earthquake resistant materials used in building houses within an earthquake zone as they remain intact under strong forces of seismic activity.
Big Rentz further states that innovative materials such as memory alloy are taken into consideration as they can also withstand seismic activity while maintaining their shape. A fiber-reinforced plastic made up of a variety of polymers provides 38% added strength and stability when wrapped around a column.
Moreover, a research conducted by Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee shows that thermocol– Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) can be used as a material to build earthquake resistant homes. Aside from that, their test revealed that this unconventional material also provides excellent thermal insulation and performs well at energy conservation in construction.
In addition, scientists and engineers are also tapping into nature to counter the force of nature itself through bamboo, mussels, and spider silk.
If your house is made-up of materials like stucco or brick that are usually less earthquake resistant, you may have to conduct a seismic retrofitting to reinforce your house and withstand earthquake forces.
The concept of earthquake-proofing, also known as seismic retrofitting, has emerged as a critical approach to mitigating the devastating impacts of seismic events on residential structures.
Earthquake-proofing entails implementing structural modifications and engineering strategies that enhance a building’s ability to withstand the forces unleashed during an earthquake. From reinforcing foundations and strengthening load-bearing walls to securing fixtures and utilities, the process involves a comprehensive evaluation and implementation of measures tailored to the specific needs of each home.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) has launched a self-check app that will aid homeowners in evaluating the resiliency and structural integrity of their house against natural disasters like earthquakes.
The app ‘How Safe Is My House?’ answer 12-point questions which are as follows:
1. Who built or designed my house?
2. How old is my house?
3. Has my house been damaged by past earthquakes or disasters?
4. What is the shape of my house?
5. Has my house been extended or expanded?
6. Are the external walls of my house 6inch (150mm) thick CHB?
7. Are steel bars of standard size and spacing used in walls?
8. Are there unsupported walls more than 3 meters wide?
9. What is the gable of my house made of?
10. What is the foundation of my house?
11. What is the soil condition under my house?
12. What is the overall condition of the house?
The app also has a website version that can be accessed here.
Earthquakes can have devastating consequences, causing loss of life, destruction of property, and long-term economic and social impacts. However, through careful planning, engineering expertise, and the incorporation of innovative technologies, it is possible to construct homes that can withstand the unpredictable shake with minimal damage.
By implementing seismic design principles, such as reinforced foundations, flexible building materials, and strategic bracing systems, homeowners can significantly increase the structural integrity of their homes. These measures help dissipate the energy generated during an earthquake and prevent it from causing catastrophic damage. Additionally, advanced construction techniques and materials, such as base isolation and damping systems, can further enhance the resilience of buildings against seismic events.
An earthquake-resilient home not only protects the lives of its occupants but also helps communities recover more swiftly after a disaster. By minimizing structural damage, the need for extensive repairs or even reconstruction can be reduced, saving valuable time and resources. This is particularly crucial in regions prone to frequent seismic activity, where the ability to bounce back quickly is essential for social and economic stability.
Building an earthquake-resistant home is a proactive and necessary measure to protect lives, preserve property, and promote the overall resilience of communities. It is a collective effort that requires collaboration between various stakeholders to create a safer and more sustainable built environment. By investing in earthquake-resistant housing, we can mitigate the impacts of earthquakes and ensure a safer future for generations to come.
When it comes to selling a home, first impressions matter. While interior design and curb appeal play a crucial role, one often overlooked aspect is luxury landscaping. Investing in high-end landscaping can significantly enhance the aesthetic appeal, functionality, and value of a property.
In this article, we will explore the ways in which luxury landscaping can positively impact the price of your home, attracting potential buyers and maximizing returns on investment.

LandCon defines luxury landscaping as ‘a very specialized form of landscaping that gives a property an upscale look.’ This type of landscaping uses high-end materials, plants, and features to create a visually stunning and inviting outdoor space. It often includes features such as water features, hardscaping, and elaborate planting beds. Luxury landscaping can be expensive, but it can also add significant value to a home.
Luxury landscapes frequently incorporate water features like ornate fountains, cascading waterfalls, tranquil ponds, or stylish swimming pools. These water features add a sense of elegance, serenity, and visual interest to the outdoor space, creating a soothing ambiance.
Luxury landscapes often include well-designed hardscape elements such as stone patios, pathways, driveways, and retaining walls. These features are built with premium materials and craftsmanship to provide durability, functionality, and aesthetic appeal.

As sustainability and environmental consciousness continue to gain momentum, finding effective ways to manage food waste has become a pressing concern. For condo dwellers, the challenge of limited space and odor control adds an extra layer of complexity to the equation. However, there is a practical and innovative solution that addresses these issues head-on: bokashi composting.
In this article, we will explore the ins and outs of bokashi composting and discuss how it can be seamlessly incorporated into your condo lifestyle. From its step-by-step implementation process to the benefits it offers, we will delve into the reasons why bokashi composting has emerged as a game-changer for managing food waste in urban settings.

Bokashi is the Japanese term for ‘fermented food waste.’ This composting method was developed by Dr. Teuro Higa, a professor in the University of Ryukyus, back in the early 1980s.
Bokashi is ideal for city living as it only needs a couple of materials and can be easily done even in small spaces like apartment or condominium unit. It involves layering your kitchen waste mixed and pressed down with bokashi bran or beneficial microbes in a special bucket. This special compost bin is sealed shut for ten to twelve days.
Unlike traditional composting that uses aerobic method in breaking down organic waste, bokashi composting utilizes certain types of bacteria that doesn’t require air to thrive. Furthermore, bokashi composting can handle any solid food waste– even meat and diary products which are usually a no-no in traditional composting.
Technically speaking, bokashi is a way of fermenting waste so it can be easily be broken down further in the composting process. Since the final product is still acidic to add directly to plants, the final stage of bokashi composting involves adding the bokashi matter in a compost pile or bin.
With its unique fermentation process and compact design, bokashi composting provides a practical and efficient way to transform kitchen scraps into nutrient-rich compost without the typical drawbacks associated with composting in confined living spaces.
Learn all the basics of bokashi process by following these steps:
Before you can even start with the composting process, you need to collect the necessary materials first. First off, you will need a special type of bucket that has a spigot or faucet at the bottom– the bokashi bucket or bokashi bin. The spigot is essential to drain the liquid by-product of the process to avoid any foul odor. This liquid is called the ‘bokashi tea’ and is an extremely nutritious treat for your plants!
Next, it’s time to prepare your bokashi compost. Layer your kitchen waste– leftover food, rotten fruits, vegetable peelings and other organic materials like dead leaves, wood clippings, or saw dust then add your bokashi bran.
Every layer of food waste should be covered with bokashi bran. Press the layers down (using your hand or a kitchen plate) firmly to release air– creating the perfect anaerobic environment. Store the bokashi bin outside under direct sunlight.
Continue layering your kitchen scraps until your bucket is full.
Make sure to check on your bin from time to time and drain the liquid as a result of the fermentation process. This compost tea can be diluted and added to your plants as fertilizer.
After roughly two weeks, the fermented organic matter should have shrinked down and throughly picket with a faint sour smell. This bokashi pre compost is still acidic to be given directly to your plant roots that’s why you need to transfer it to your fallow patch (a bare spot or separate soil in your balcony garden) to complete the decomposition process. After two weeks, your bokashi compost should be ready to be feed directly to your plant or mixed with garden soil.
Bokashi composting can such a great alternative to traditional composting methods due to the following reasons:
Unlike traditional composting that can take up to several months to break down food scraps and tranform them into fertilizer, the bokashi method only takes a couple of weeks up to a month, thanks to the anaerobic process of breaking down organic materials.
Traditional composting has a reputation of emitting strong, foul odors which can be extremely unpleasant if you are living in apartment or condominiums. The airtight design of the bokashi system prevents foul smells from escaping, making it suitable for indoor use without causing any unpleasant odors in your condo.
Bokashi composting requires minimal space, making it ideal for small living spaces like condos. The compact bins can easily fit under sinks or in closets, making it a convenient waste management solution.
Bokashi composting can handle a wide variety of organic waste, including meat, dairy, and citrus fruits, which may not be suitable for traditional composting methods. This versatility allows you to compost a larger range of kitchen scraps.
The final product of bokashi composting is a nutrient-rich compost known as bokashi compost. This compost can enhance the soil quality and support the growth of healthy plants.
By implementing bokashi composting in your condo, you can significantly reduce the amount of organic waste that goes to landfill. This waste diversion helps minimize greenhouse gas emissions and contributes to a more sustainable environment.
Living in smaller spaces like a condo unit shouldn’t discourage us from properly managing our wastes. In fact, we should be more proactive towards managing our wastes, especially the ones that detoriate easily.
Bokashi composting is an innovative and effective method of composting that can be a great alternative for eliminating waste in your condominium. It offers several advantages over traditional composting methods and is particularly well-suited for urban environments where space and odor control may be a concern.
By embracing bokashi composting, you can play an active role in reducing landfill waste, minimizing greenhouse gas emissions, and nurturing a sustainable living environment within the confines of your condo.
Artificial intelligence. AI.
You’ve probably came across this term a couple of times– on your TV while watching the news or through a suggested post while you are scrolling through your social media.
TechTarget defines AI as the ‘simulation of human intelligence processes by machines, especially computer systems.’ Through the use of natural language processing, expert systems, speech recognition, and machine vision, ai technology is able to mimic cognitive human abilities such as problem-solving, decision-making, learning, reasoning, and perception.
Aside from performing human capabilities, these systems also has the ability to process and analyze large volumes of data, recognize patterns, and come up with predictions or decisions. They are also capable of handing more complex tasks that humans cannot.
You may or may not be aware of it, but we are using AI frequently in our daily lives. A survey conducted by Pew Research Center last December 12-18 2022 revealed that 27% of adult American participants are aware that they are using AI technology every day. From the using Face ID function to open your smartphone, scrolling through social media, and using google search, AI is already engraved in the lives of us human beings.

In the recently concluded BusinessWorld Economic Forum 2023 held at the Grand Hyatt Manila in Taguig City, Peter Maquera, Microsoft Asia Pacific chief executive officer for Philippines, stated that the integration of AI technology can potentially add $90 billion to the Philippine economy in the next seven years.
Maquera further emphasized the potential businesses that can largely benefit AI tech include ‘content generation, summarization, code generation, and semantic research.’
Last 2021, the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) released a National Artificial Intelligence (AI) Strategy Roadmap that will serve as the government and private sector’s guide in implementing ai technologies and developing ai ecosystem. The main focus of this roadmap is to elevate every Filipino’s lives, improve local industries’ productivity, and strenghten the competitiveness of the national economy.
As AI tech continues to ascend in the country, Surigao del Norte 2nd District Rep. Robert “Ace” Barbers files House Bill (HB) 7396 which aims to create a ‘superbody’ called Artificial Intelligence Development Authority (AIDA). This agency will monitor and regulate the tasks, duties, and responsibilities in implementing the AI national strategy proposed by DTI.
Aside from that, the government also expressed its plans of building a national research center called National Center for AI Research (N-CAIR), which will be composed of scientists and engineers.
Moreover, it seeks to protect Filipinos from individuals who may take advantage of AIs and use it for fraudulent activities.
Artificial Intelligence (AI) has the potential to revolutionize various fields and significantly impact the economy. Here are some ways AI can help in different domains and contribute to the Philippine economy:
Machine learning algorithms can analyze medical data, such as symptoms, medical images, and patient records, to assist doctors in accurate diagnosis with greater accuracy. In addition, AI-powered devices can continuously monitor patient vitals, detect anomalies, and provide real-time alerts to healthcare providers, enabling proactive interventions.
The pandemic season heightened the adoption of machine learning in some Philippine healthcare companies and institutions as they recognize the benefits of using ai in the healthcare field.
AI algorithms are also great help to fraud detection as they can analyze large volumes of financial transactions to identify patterns of fraudulent activities, helping financial institutions detect and prevent fraud.
When it comes to Algorithmic trading, AI-powered trading systems can also analyze market data, news, and historical patterns to make informed investment decisions, improving trading efficiency and profitability. It can also provide a helping hand in risk assessment as AI models can analyze credit histories, financial statements, and market trends to evaluate creditworthiness, assess risks, and make lending decisions.
Starting with Quality control, AI can analyze sensor data and perform real-time monitoring to identify defects or anomalies in the manufacturing process, improving product quality and reducing waste. Aside from that, AI algorithms can analyze historical and real-time data to optimize inventory management, demand forecasting, route planning, and warehouse operations, reducing costs and improving efficiency that is extremely crucial in supply chain optimization.
Lastly, AI can analyze sensor data from machinery to predict equipment failures or maintenance needs, enabling proactive maintenance and reducing downtime. This is called predictive maintenance.
When it comes to the retail industry, AI technology can provide personalized recommendations through analyzing customer data and preferences. They in return provide personalized product recommendations, enhancing the shopping experience for the customres and increasing sales for the enterprise.
When it comes to inventory management, AI is also a handy tool as it can analyze historical sales data, market trends, and external factors to optimize inventory levels, reducing stockouts and overstocking.
Going to the education sector, AI is also can also adapt educational content and methods based on individual student’s strengths, weaknesses, and learning styles, enhancing engagement and improving learning outcomes. Aside from that, AI-powered tutoring systems can provide personalized guidance and feedback to students, facilitating self-paced learning and improving academic performance.
Internet of Things Philippines Inc. listed down the benefits of using AI which are as follows:
Committing mistakes is completely for humans to commit: that’s what makes them human after all. Howeve, the same thing cannot be said to computers. Correct programming with the integration of AI results to reduced errors and great precision and accuracy in predictions.
AI-powered chatbots and virtual assistants can provide customer support, answer queries, and assist in online shopping, improving customer engagement and satisfaction. While there’s still need for a team of customer support at the back end, digital assistants help filter out such queries.
Doing the same thing over and over again my become too boring or bland for humans. But it’s not the same thing for computers. You can instruct them to do repetitive tasks without complaining about boredom.
The time spent for completing such tasks can be used by humans in activities that require creativity.
A typical adult works a 9-hour shift per day with a one hour break in between to referesh themselves. They may even take some days or weeks off to achieve a healthy work-life balance.
On the other hand, computers and machines do not need to file leaves or take breaks just to work efficiently.
Today we will be creating an elderly friendly home in the Philippines.
Filipinos are known for their strong emphasis on family and the importance of maintaining close ties with relatives. It is common for Filipinos to have extended families, which often include not only immediate family members but also grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, and even close family friends. This extended family structure creates a sense of belonging, support, and unity within the Filipino culture.
In fact, sons and daughters encourage their parents to live with them under the same roof even after they tied the knot with his or her partner. It is for the primary reason that they can still look after their parents or grandparents even after opening the marriage chapter of their lives.
Indeed, living with elderly parents or grandparents is already engraved in the Filipino culture. That is why it is important to ensure that when building a house, it should also be elderly friendly.
In this article, we will look at the 6 design tips to transform your abode into an elderly friendly home.

If there is an elderly person living with you, it’s crucial to consider the traffic flow of the house. Meaning, you need to create a space where your senior citizens can move freely without bumping into anything.
It’s better to opt for layouts with clean and clutter-free layouts such as open plan layout. According to SwanBuild, ‘open style floor plans are ideal for senior living as they allow for continuity in flooring surfaces, which works well for those who will eventually need assistance from walkers or wheelchairs.’ Moreover, it minimizes the existence of doors and walls that can disrupt the easy flow of space inside the house.

Ambient lighting is a must in creating an elderly friendly home in the Philippines. As their eyesight faded over time, it is difficult for them to see stuff on the floor or located pathways which may lead to critical accidents.
As much as possible, install larger windows to allow more natural light to come in your house. Avoid using too much artificial light as these fixtures may hurt their eyesight. Glares can also affect their eyesight so it’s important to add window treatments like curtains or blinds. Light switches should also be within reach.
Aside from adequate lighting, you should also add grab bars and railings when creating an elderly friendly home in the Philippines. They provide extra support when sitting and standing up, especially in accident prone areas like bathrooms. They are also great additions to your stairs or walkways for added security and can double up as a tower rail. Using lever style hardware in your bathroom doorknobs are also advisable for easy grip.
Remember not to use tower rails as grab bars as they are sometimes installed loosely and may cause accidents.

Interior designers and homeowners can agree that a polished stone flooring adds a lot to the glamour and visual appeal of the house. However, it is the very same thing that can cause slips and falls for seniors. In areas like the bathroom or kitchen, non-skid tiles should be used.
To prevent falls and accidental slips, you apply an anti slip treatment to your floors or go for pebbled floors. Adding perforated anti slip rugs are helpful, too.
The same thing can be said to carpets and rugs. Loose carpets are dangerous, too. If your elderly prefers to have under his or her feet, you can just add anti slip rug underlays.
Aside from the furniture layout, you should also take into account items or stuff that have sharp edges. They can be harmful especially for active seniors when they bump on them. In creating an elderly friendly home in the Philippines, choose rounded or smooth furniture. In addition, you can also purchase corner guards in your local store or online.

As our elderlies may have a hard time going from one place to another, adding easily accessible storage can be of great help. Opt for base cabinets with drawers or long wall cabinets so it will be easy for the elderlies to grab stuff without having to climb or stretch.
In addition, you should also keep your interior space free from clutter and organized.
It doesn’t take an interior designer to know that uneven flooring can cause fatal accidents, trips, or falls. According to The New Paper, ‘raised flooring like thresholds and steps can be a hazard that leads to tripping.’
Moreover, interior designer of Aart Boxx Interior Ivan Lin suggests to keep the floor surface as levelled as possible. Curves, dips, and raised platforms are also a no-no.
