If there’s one thing employees are excited about during the holiday season, it is most certainly because of the 13th month pay bonus. I mean who doesn’t want to receive extra money after a year of working hard?
You may think a lot of stuff about where you are going to spend this bonus. Maybe purchase the latest gadget of your choice? You might be thinking of spending it on a weekend trip. Or perhaps you are considering setting aside a significant amount for your retirement fund.
There are a lot of temptations on where you’re going to spend your money, but before you go off and splurge all the amount in one go, you have to think first about how to spend it wisely. After all, you don’t want to welcome the new year with empty pockets.
With that, we’ve listed down smart ways and tips on how you can spend your 13th month pay wisely. But before that, let’s take a look at how we are able to enjoy this mandatory benefit.
The majority of Filipinos give credit to former President Ferdinand Marcos Sr. for the 13th month pay benefit as he was the one who signed Presidential Decree No. 851 on December 16, 1975. Under this decree, “all employers required to pay their employees a 13th month pay.”
But there’s a catch.
The decree did not cover all employees but rather was specified to workers earning less than PHP 1,000 as their basic salary, regardless of the nature of their employment.
On August 13, 1986, former president Corazon Aquino issued a Memorandum Order No. 28 which modified the PD 851, giving way to the inclusion of the 13th month pay to all employees, regardless of their basic earnings. As for government employees, Republic Act No. 6686 was enacted, prompting them to receive a Christmas bonus amounting to one month basic salary plus one thousand pesos cash gift.
While a lot of Filipinos give credit to Marcos Sr. for the 13th month pay bonus, it is the true effort of labor leaders that pushed the materialization of the law.
One worth mentioning is the then lawyer and labor leader Zoilo de la Cruz who conceptualized and authored the 13th Month Pay Bill. An article by the VERA files also mentioned that the Social Amelioration Program in the sugar industry and the allocation of the cost of living allowance to employees working in the private sector were also proposed by De la Cruz. De la Cruz served as the president of the National Congress of Unions in the Sugar Industry in the Philippines (NACUSIP) in 1975.
Furthermore, Eulogio R. Lerum, a lawyer and the leader of the National Labor Union, sponsored De la Cruz’s bill. An article by Village Pipol also mentioned that Lerum was the one behind the “10% night work premium, 5 days annual incentive leave, and payment by the employer of the 10 percent attorney’s fees in case of illegal withholding of wages.”
Looking back at Labor Advisory, all rank-and-file employees in the private sector, regardless of their position, designation, employees, and regardless of how their wage was paid, are entitled to receive 13t month pay, given that they’ve worked for the company for at least one month.
Note that a 13th month pay is different from a Christmas bonus. While the former is mandated by the government, the latter comes from the generosity of your company! If you are lucky enough, you can both enjoy a 13th month pay and a Christmas bonus!
Wondering how a 13th month pay is computed? Here’s the way to do it!
According to the Labor Advisory No. 18-21 or the Guidelines on the Payment of Thirteenth Month Pay, first, determine your yearly total basic salary then divide it by 12. For instance, an employer who has a monthly basic salary of PHP 20,000, had a complete attendance year round, and never took a day off will receive a 13th month pay of PHP 20,000. For a clearer view, let’s take a look at this computation:
PHP 20,000 x 12 = PHP 240,000
PHP 240,000/12= PHP 20,000
For newly-hired rank-and-file employees who have worked for less than a year in the company, he or she is also eligible to receive a 13th month pay on a pro-rated basis.
To compute this, take your monthly total basic salary, multiply it by the number of months you have worked then divide it by 12. For an employee who has a monthly total basic salary of PHP 20,000 and has worked for six months, the computation will be:
PHP 20,000 x 6 = PHP 120,000
PHP 120,000/12= PHP 10,000
According to the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE), every employee should receive their 13th month pay on or before December 24. Moreover, the government agency doesn’t allow employers to apply or request for exemptions and deferment of the 13th month pay.
If it happens that your employer failed to give your mandatory benefit, you can report it to DOLE’s 24/7 hotline at 1349 or fill out the query form on their website.

This year, however, why not take a more eco friendly approach to wrap your gifts? It’s time to put aside your usual Christmas gift wrap, scissors, and tape and give way to the art of Furoshiki– the eco friendly gift wrapping alternative this holiday season!
Furoshiki refers to a small, square piece of cloth that is used to wrap and transport items, gift-giving, or home decor. The fabric used is usually made up of nylon, silk, cotton or organic cotton, or rayon and comes in varying decorative patterns and prints.
The term also refers to wrapping techniques and procedures. It is a combination of the Japanese words ‘furo’ meaning bath, and ‘shiki’ which means ‘to spread.’ If you have unused fabric or scrap fabric lying inside the drawers of your home, you can repurpose them into fancy gift wrappers for the holidays!
The use and practice of furoshiki date back to the 8th century in Nara, Japan. During this period, the cloth used to wrap items and objects was initially called ‘tsutsumi’ which translates to package or present.
Moving forward, the capital city of Japan was moved to Heian-kyou (modern-day Kyoto). This period in Japan’s history is regarded as the ‘Gilded Age.’ Clothing during this era is more elaborate and embroidered. And the cloth used to wrap these clothes is called ‘kuromo utsumi.’
It is believed that the actual use of the term furoshiki started during the Muromachi period (1336-1573). A shogun by the name of Ashikaga Yoshimitsu invited feudal lords into his bathhouse to stay and use the facility. Each guest would wrap their kimono in a piece of clothing and would put family crests or emblems on top to avoid mixing them up with other lords’ belongings.
After the bath, some of them stood on top of these clothes to relax and dry up, hence the term bath spread.
When the 17th and 19th centuries entered, the use of Furoshiki had become widespread and adopted by society. It is evident in the woodblocks showing local townspeople and travelers using furoshiki wrapping in their daily life.
The art of Furoshiki perfectly demonstrated the 3 R’s of sustainable living: reduce, reuse, and recycle. Through this gift wrapping technique, you are effectively reducing the waste of wrapping paper
The main advantage of using Furoshiki is that it can be reused over and over again. If you are giving out gifts to someone, might as well include the cloth in the present so the receiver can use it again for a similar purpose! This method effectively cuts down the use of traditional wrapping paper and promotes a more environmental-friendly and sustainable approach!
You might feel a bit hesitant to try fabric wrapping because it looks complicated to follow at first glance. It’s quite the opposite actually! There are a lot of easy-to-follow tutorials online which will help you master this wonderful art. And of course, we won’t be straying far away from the tidying-expert Marie Kondo! Don’t you just hate it when you commit wrapping mistakes and just have to start over again? Chances are you have to start over again and the wrapping paper will end up in the trash bin. That adds up to the paper waste!
Whereas in furoshiki, if you are unhappy with your wrap, you can simply start over again by untying the knots you made!
All you need to start furoshiki is the piece of cloth itself–better if it’s recycled or you could use an old scarf! There’s only one requirement: your fabric should be square. The size of your fabric depends on the size of your gift, but the most commonly used ones are 17×17 inches and 28×28 inches. Another tip is that the cloth must be three times bigger than the size of your present. You don’t have to strictly follow this, though. Just make sure you have enough room to cover the item.
Also, you have to consider the material of your fabric. It should be sturdy enough to carry the weight of your gift. And last, the pattern of your fabric!
If you got everything prepared, then it’s time to wrap things up the furoshiki style!

This style is perfect if you are wrapping square objects or boxes. Place your object diagonally so that your fabric resembles a diamond shape with the object in the center. Get the bottom side of the cloth and put it over the object, tucking any excess fabric underneath. Do the same procedure for the top side of the fabric.
Last, pull the corners together and tie them into a knot. Here’s a tip: pull the middle cloth first before grabbing the corners for a neater crease! Check out this easy-to-follow tutorial by The Green Wrapper!
To do yotsu musubi, gather opposite ends of the fabric and tie them into a double knot. Then, grab the remaining opposite ends and tie them as well into a double knot across the first knot. To create cute petal shapes on top, pull the corners of the fabric and spread them out!

Don’t worry as there’s a furoshiki way to wrap longer gifts and objects!
First, lay down your cloth on a flat surface. Turn your cloth so that it resembles a diamond in shape facing you. Place your object on one corner and roll the fabric until it reaches the opposite end. Grab the ends and tie them into a double knot ribbon.
Wrapping bottles has never been easier thanks to this furoshiki wrap called bin tsutsumi. You don’t have to find a box or paper bag as the fabric itself can hold the weight of the bottle. The size of your fabric depends on how tall your bottle is, but the usual dimensions are 70 cm by 70 cm.
To start, place your bottle (for instance, a wine bottle) on the center of the wrap in a standing position. Then, grab the opposite ends of the fabric and tie them into a double knot. Next, grab the remaining ends and wrap them around the bottle, overlapping each other. Finish your craft by tying the ends into a double knot. Don’t forget to pull the edges for the petals!

Of course, there’s a furoshiki way to wrap two bottles at the same time!
Simply place the two bottles at the center of the fabric, bottoms facing each other. Grab the bottom flap and pull over the bottles, covering them. Then, roll the bottles until you reach the opposite end of the fabric. Lift one bottle in an upright, standing position. Do the same procedure for the other bottle and finish your wrap with a double knot on top of the bottles.

Before you make your European dreams come true, let’s define first what is a Schengen and non Schengen countries! Do these terms ring a bell to you?
The Schengen Area consist of 26 European countries who abolished border checks to allow more movement and travel. They removed the need of presenting passports when going through mutual borders while at the same time complying with external border rules.
Residents of these Schengen countries travel freely and find job opportunities in other member countries.
Since it’s establishment in 1985, Schengen Area has now 26 member countries, which are mostly part of the European Union. The Schengen Area is also referred to as the ‘World’s Largest Visa Free Zone.’
Take a look at the list of the Schengen countries below:
22 countries that are part of the Schengen Area follows a set of rules, regulations, policies, and legislations called the Schengen Acquis. This ensures the proper functioning of the Schengen zone.
The remaining four countries: Iceland, Norway, Switzerland, and Liechtenstein, which are all members of the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) are also enforcing the Schengen Acquis with specific agreements.
Some people might refer to the European Union and Schengen Area as the same. But they have distinct differences that travelers like you should take note of.
As mentioned earlier, a Schengen Area is a zone in Europe that dissolved internal borders to give room to more travel opportunities among its members, imposing travel and visa policies to regulate such movement. Whereas, the European Union encompasses more than that– it is a political and economic union.
And it is interesting to know that there are EU countries that is not part of the Schengen Area and there are non EU countries that have joined the exclusive zone.
It all started in June 14 1985, when France, Germany, Belgium, Luxemburg, and the Netherlands decided to create a ‘Europe without borders’–which will be later known as the Schengen Area, and thus signed the Schengen Agreement. Interestingly, the treaty was named after the place where it was signed, which was the Schengen village in Luxembourg City.
Then in June 19, 1990, the Schengen Convention materialized, formally starting the implementation of the Schengen Agreement. Under this convention, internal borders within the participating countries were dissolved. At the same time, the procedures of the Schengen Visa were drafted as well as a single database called as Schengen Information System was established.
And finally on March 26, 1995, border control between the member states namely France, Belgium, Germany, the Netherland, Spain, Portugal, and Luxemburg were dissolved, allowing free movement within the Schengen Area.
A month after, Austria joined followed by Finland, Iceland, Denmark, Norway and Sweden in December of 1996. Lastly, Italy and Austria abolished their internal border controls in 1997.
As mentioned earlier, there are EU members that are not part of the Schengen Area. These are the following:
Moreover, there are European countries, mostly in the Eastern side of the continent that are included in the Schengen zone but aren’t considered as Schengen states such as:
There are cases of de facto, such as microstates of Andorra, Monaco, and Vatican City, and San Marino as they are they aren’t European Union countries and don’t impose border controls.
If you are planning to travel to Europe, you will need to apply for a Schengen Visa to be able to enter the Schengen countries mentioned above.
In general, the visa issued from any of the Schengen countries allows you to cross Schengen borders but it doesn’t entitle you to enter that specific Schengen Area. You may need to present other documents at the external borders such as a letter of invitation, travel itineraries, hotel accommodations, etc. to prove that you have sufficient budget to fund your stay and return trip to your country.
Usually, a standard Schengen Visa allows you to travel within the Schengen countries for 90 days within a 180 day-period. Applying for a Schengen visa can be time-consuming, so give yourself a lot of room to accomplish all the steps– starting from the filling out of the application form, acquisition of necessary documents, and attending interview at the consulate or the visa application center.
If you are planning to visit more than one Schengen countries, you must apply to the Consulate of the country you are visiting first. For instance, your itineraries consist of Germany, France, Greece, and Italy. You have to apply for a Schengen visa at the German consulate here in the Philippines.
Take note that the visa fee varies depending on the age of the applicant. Remember that this fee is non refundable even when your application is denied by the embassy.
For adults and children with the age of 12-18 years old, the visa fee is 80 euros (or around PHP 4,800). For children who are 6-11 years old, the visa fee is 40 euros (around PHP 2,400).
Visa approval can take up to 15-30 days, but during peak or busy months, it can take up to 60 months to be approved. It is best to apply for a Schengen Visa one month before the actual date of your trip.

If it’s a single entry visa, you can only enter once that particular Schengen area–you cannot go back once you left. Check your Schengen visas by finding the sticker ’01’ at the bottom. That sticker indicates single entry.
However, if you have a multiple entry visa, you may enter the same Schengen area twice or three during the validity of your stay.
The general rule is that your visa can be extended if you haven’t consumed all of the 90 days given that the extension is within the 180-day period and your visa hasn’t expired.
You have to prove that due to force majeure, humanitarian reasons, or serious personal reasons, you have to extend the validity of your visa.
The answer is no. In order to enter a non Schengen country, you have to apply and comply to their visa requirements.
If you prefer, you can apply for a non Schengen visa in addition to your Schengen visa.

The Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) completely understands that fulfilling feeling that’s why they continue to forge and implement programs that will help improve every OFW’s way of life, and of course, aid them in providing high-quality education for their children.
Being an OWWA member surely does have its perks, and one of those is being eligible to apply to scholarship programs. And the best thing? You just have to keep your OWWA membership active so you can take advantage of these benefits!
Today, we will be looking at the different OWWA scholarships OFWs like you can use to help fund your children’s (or maybe a sibling’s) education!
The first OWWA scholarship program that we’re going to highlight is the ODSP.
Open to active OWWA members earning a monthly salary not exceeding $600 (about PHP 34,397.40), this scholarship program gives financial assistance amounting to PHP 20,000 per academic year for OFW dependents (could be a sibling or children) who are planning to take a 4-year or 5-year baccalaureate course in any college or university.
College expenses are no joke, it’s a good thing to know OFWs have other sources of budget to fund their children’s college needs.

Aside from OFWs having a monthly salary of no more than $600, here are the other requirements for this scholarship grant.

After the acquisition and submission of the necessary documents comes the qualifying examination. Usually, the ODSP application starts in June and ends in the first week of August. However, these dates are still dependent on the scheduled qualifying exam by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST). The date will be announced by the Responsible Outgoing College Students (ROCS).
Moving forward, ensure that you have accomplished all the necessary documents; incomplete submissions will not be processed. Also, the submission of complete documents doesn’t mean that the applicant is an automatic recipient of the scholarship grant. He is still subject to verification and approval. Finally, the top 200 passers of the qualifying exam will be eligible for the scholarship grant.
Good news for OFWs who want to get back to school and finish their diploma, as this next OWWA scholarship program provides assistance for that purpose!
EDSP is another OWWA scholarship program qualified members can apply for. This scholarship program grants financial allowance of PHP 60,000 per school year for qualified dependents of active OWWA members who wish to take a 4-year or 5-year baccalaureate course in college.

And we do understand how upsetting it can be to be offloaded on the day of your flight. All of the effort and time you spent booking your travel, acquisition of the necessary documents, and finding accommodation will be put to waste.
So, to save money and a whole lot of hassle, we will be looking at the reasons why a traveler is being offloaded and some of the tips you can use to pass the Philippine Immigration interview.
Essentially, offloading is the act of barring or pulling a boarded passenger out of the aircraft. This could be due to various reasons, ranging from insufficient documents or the intended destination posing security threats.
Just to clarify, the Bureau of Immigration does not have an offloading policy and it seldom happens that they literally pull out a passenger from the plane.
What they really do is screen passengers even right before they board the aircraft, deciding whether they are qualified to fly off abroad or not. Technically, that is not offloading.
But Filipinos have used the word offloading as an umbrella term for someone who wasn’t allowed to exit the country or when he was rejected or blocked at the immigration office.
